Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is repatriation?

Repatriation is the process of returning the remains of a loved one to their place of origin when they pass away interstate or internationally. Depending on the location and the transport options available, remains will be transferred using a vehicle, airplane and / or a boat.

  • What happens when an Australian citizen dies overseas?

The first requirement when a loved one passes away overseas is to notify the nearest Australian embassy, high commission or consulate as soon as possible. Depending on the location, there may be legal requirements to meet prior to returning them home.

  • How long does it take to repatriate a body?

The time it takes to repatriate a body to Sydney or the Central Coast depends on the local regulations in the country or location of death, as well as a range of other circumstances.

For international repatriation, it can generally take between 1-3 weeks. For interstate and national repatriation, it can be between 7-10 days. Please be aware that these timeframes are an average, not a guarantee.

  • How much does it cost to repatriate a body?

The costs for repatriation can vary depending on a number of factors, such as the location your are repatriating from (international or national), costs of flights or other transportation methods, and any additional funeral extras required in the service.

Due to the variable nature, there are no average repatriation costs that we can provide. However, our Funeral Directors can prepare a personalised estimate for you, including gathering prices from airlines and local Consolates, to give a better idea of costs to help inform your decision.
